RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Competing in another low scoring affair to wrap up the weekend, the UC San Diego softball team earned a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon as they took down UC Riverside to earn the series victory.
Following Sunday's action, the Tritons improved to 16-29, 9-11 overall and UC Riverside fell to 15-26, 9-12 in Big West play.
Â
Tossing her second complete game of the weekend,
India Caldwell allowed just one run in her seven innings of work while allowing four hits, one walk and striking out three Highlanders hitters. Â Â
Â
Leading the way for the Tritons' offense on Sunday afternoon was center fielder
Lexi O'Gorman who went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored to help UC San Diego pick up the one-run victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first five of innings of play were a pitcher's duel as each starter dominated in the circle with both teams having trouble generating base runners.
Â
UC San Diego was able to break through first as a bottom of the order rally began with a
Marissa Hassis opposite field double and came around to score on
Lexi O'Gorman double to center field. With two away in the inning and an intentional walk to
Hailey Mulligan, Alexis DeMarse delivered a decisive two-run RBI single to bring O'Gorman home and give the Tritons a 2-0 lead.
Â
India Caldwell continued her stellar work on the mound in the bottom of the fifth to maintain UC San Diego's narrow lead as she closed in on yet another complete game.
Â
The Highlanders weren't going quietly as they scored their first run on an RBI double to left and brought the tying run into scoring position before settling for just the one run to make it 2-1 Tritons.
Â
Caldwell made the lead stand up as she retired three Highlander hitters in order as the Tritons picked up the series victory and their third win in the team's last four games. Â
