Softball Tops Hornets Before Falling to Lancers

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – UC San Diego went 1-1 on the second day of the Lance Up Invite when they defeated Sacramento State, 9-1, before falling to California Baptist, 10-2.
 
The Tritons move to 6-17 while Sacramento State moves to 14-7 and CBU moves to 13-11.
 
Cracking 12 hits and scoring nine runs over six innings, the Tritons were hot at the plate with Deena Pederson leading the way going two-for-three with two runs scored and two more batted in. Morgan Eng added her bat going 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Even with nine runs scored, the Tritons left seven more on base. India Caldwell tallied another complete game and another win with no earned runs, one walk, and two strikeouts on five hits. The right-hander faced 24 batters on 81 pitches, she retired 9 batters in a row from the third to the sixth.
 
In game two, the Tritons tallied seven hits with Deena Pederson once again leading at 3-for-3 with a run scored. Only four other Tritons tallied a hit. Shelby Thompson got the start against CBU and gave up nine runs on 13 hits with three strikeouts. Claire Adams came on in the fourth allowing one run on one hit with one walk.

UC SAN DIEGO 9, SACRAMENTO STATE 1
Opening the first inning with two runs, UC San Diego jumped on the board with hits coming from Morgan Eng, Deena Pederson, and two fielder's choices. Eng's single down the left field line made her the lead off runner and she proceed to steal second with Pederson at the plate. The senior sent a single out to center field on a full count to plate Eng. Pederson stole second and was advanced third on a ground out. Hailey Mulligan forced a fielder's choice giving Pederson time to score to make it 2-0.
 
Sac State responded in the bottom of the first with a lone run, 2-1.
 
In the second inning it was more of the same for the gold and blue when Teagan Dobson got the inning started on a lead off double powered to left field. Zoë Richards then laced a single past second base to advance Dobson to third and reach. Mariah Melendez then hit a sac fly to plate Dobson. On a Hornet error, Eng reached to advance Richards into scoring position. Lexi O'Gorman brought Richards home on a single out to right field. Mulligan cracked a double to center field to score Eng and O'Gorman, 6-1.
 
India Caldwell proceeded to shut out Sacramento State from the third inning on.
 
UC San Diego tallied a run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. After stealing third, Eng scored on Pederson's sac fly in the fourth to add another run to the Triton's score, 7-1. Coming on as a pinch runner, Marissa Hassis was batted around the bases to reach third and was then batted in on a sac fly by Melendez, 8-1. Pederson made her way to second with a single and stolen base before getting batted in by O'Gorman.
 
After retiring her ninth batter, Caldwell got out of jam in the bottom of the sixth forcing a fly out and a ground out with a fielder's choice.

CALIFORNIA BAPTIST 1O, UC SAN DIEGO 2
 Falling to CBU in five innings, the Tritons were able to score two runs in the first and second innings. Striking first, Deena Pederson's bat remained hot in game two as she powered a triple to the left field warning track in her first at-bat. Then Lexi O'Gorman brought the senior home on a double to right field.
 
CBU scored four in the bottom of the first.
 
In the second, Brooklyn Lee battled an eight-pitch at-bat to win the walk and become the lead runner. Back-to-back singles from Alexa DeMarse and Lily Hermosillo advanced Lee to third. Morgan Eng forced a fielder's choice allowing Lee to get home and score.
 
CBU went on to score six more runs to end the game in five innings. After leaving seven runs on in game one, the Tritons left five more on in the second game as well.

TRITON TIDBITS
  • On a three-game hitting streak, Deena Pederson went 5-for-6 today at the plate with three runs and two more batted in.
  • Hailey Mulligan's hitting streak reached 11 games before getting snapped in game two of the day.
  • Tossing her fourth complete game, India Caldwell is sporting a 0.00 ERA on the day after giving up no earned runs.
  • Morgan Eng is perfect on the basepaths at Lance Up Invite with four stolen bases.

UC San Diego continues the Lance Up Invite tomorrow with another doubleheader set to begin at 3 p.m. vs. Sacramento State and California Baptist at 5:30 p.m.
