Tritons Fall in Extra-Inning Finale

UC San Diego fell to UC Davis, 2-1, in 11 innings on Monday

DAVIS, Calif.—UC San Diego baseball fell to UC Davis, 2-1, in 11 innings on Monday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium. The Tritons (16-6, 3-3 Big West) outhit UCD, 8-6, but stranded 12 base runners compared to eight for the Aggies (12-10, 3-3 Big West).

Starter Zack Ernisse went 4.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Izaak Martinez (2-1) made his third appearance of the series, pitching 4.2 innings and retiring 14 batters in order before giving up back-to-back hits for the game-winner in the eleventh.

Patrick Hackworth finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and Anthony Potestio went 2-for-3 for the Tritons. Noah Sudyka was credited with the only RBI for the Tritons in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
For the third straight game, the Aggies got on the board with a run in the first inning. The Tritons got a runner to third with two outs in the first but were unable to capitalize. An inning later, UC San Diego tied the game with a two-out RBI single to right field by Sudyka.

Ernisse, Donovan Chriss and some impressive Triton defense combined to allow just one base runner in the next four innings for UC Davis, with only one advancing into scoring position.

UC San Diego got one of its best opportunities of the day, loading the bases in the top of the sixth with one out. However, a strikeout and a fielder's choice ground-out ended the inning without a run for the Tritons.

The Aggies threatened in the bottom of the sixth with two on and one out, but a diving catch by Sudyka at short and another impressive stop by Doyle Kane at first base kept the game knotted at 1-1.

With two on and nobody out, Martinez entered in the bottom of the seventh and forced three easy fly-out/pop-up plays to end the inning without a run. Martinez followed with a 1-2-3 inning in both the ninth and the tenth—including three consecutive strikeouts—to give the Tritons a chance.

After a pair of quiet innings at the plate, UC San Diego rallied in the top of the 10th, loading the bases with one out. The Tritons looked to break the tie but a double play ended the inning without a run.

Martinez continued his streak of 4.2 perfect innings of work, securing the first two outs of the 11th before a double by the Aggies and a wild pitch put the winning run on third base. UC Davis then knocked a single over Michael Crossland's head in center field to secure the walk-off victory.
