LA JOLLA, Calif. – Wrapping the La Jolla Invitational against California Baptist, UC San Diego softball fell to the Lancers in an 8-3 decision at Triton Softball Field on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Getting the start in the circle,
Gabby Williams gave up two runs on five hits with one strikeout in three innings of work. Coming in as relief,
India Caldwell gave up two earned runs on five hits after facing 17 batters in three innings of work. In one inning of work,
Claire Adams tossed a strikeout and gave up one hit.
Lexi O'Gorman and
Alexa DeMarse led at the plate with a combined effort of 4-for-7 with a run and a walk from DeMarse and two runs batted in by O'Gorman.
Teagan Dobson added support going 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lancers struck first in the third inning with two runs in the third inning followed by another run in the fourth.
Â
The Tritons cut the deficit by two with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Teagan Dobson got the inning started with a one out double to left center.
Mariah Melendez then took five pitches to earn the walk. After a Lancer pitching change,
Morgan Eng singled a slow roller past the pitcher to load the bases for O'Gorman. With one out on the board, the freshman stepped up to send a single up the middle on the first pitch for Dobson and Melendez to score.
Â
In the sixth, CBU hung five runs on the board to pull away. UC San Diego threatened in the fifth and sixth innings but were unable to convert.
Â
In the seventh, the Tritons were able to score one more run before falling to the Lancers. DeMarse sent a looper to right center on one out to become the go-ahead run. In her first collegiate at-bat,
Jackie Tremper battled a full count to earn the walk. On two outs, Dobson reached on an error by the shortstop to bring in DeMarse and advance
Hailey Mulligan, who re-entered for Tremper, to third. The Tritons' rally was cut short on line out to the pitcher.
