Fencing Dominates Philadelphia Invitational to Open Spring Season

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – UC San Diego fencing began their 2024 spring season on a high note during their three days of competition at the Philadelphia Invitational. Leading the way for the Tritons against strong opponents back east was Phileas Auray and Kyra Wu who excelled for UC San Diego's men's and women's teams respectively.

ON THE MEN'S SIDE
Beginning the action in the City of Brotherly Love, the UCSD men's team was able to post a 4-4 overall record in team competition as Auray was able to lead the way individually by posting a 14-8 record over the weekend to push his overall season record over the .500 mark at 22-20.

Other highlights over the weekend included Derek Rong posting a 10-6 mark in the men's epee, while Lucas Zeng had a 10-8 record in the men's foil competing at both Temple and Penn.

ON THE WOMEN'S SIDE
For the Tritons' women's team, it was a stand out weekend across the board as the women went 6-2 overall as a team while the women's epee went a perfect 8-0 in their events and the foil team was just behind at 7-1 for the weekend.

Wu and Rafaella Gomes were the stand out performers individually, as Wu achieved a 15-2 record over the weekend and Gomes was right there as well with a 11-2 mark competing in the foil.

QUOTABLE
"I am thrilled with this weekend's success, especially in the women's epee (8-0) and foil squads (7-1)," UC San Diego head fencing coach Juan Ignacio Calderon said. "We have areas for improvement in men's consistency and balance, but we're confident in addressing these for the upcoming Northwestern Duals."
