55 Tritons Named to Fall Big West All-Academic Team

IRVINE, Calif.—The UC San Diego athletic department is proud to announce that 55 Triton scholar-athletes were selected to the 2023 Big West Fall All-Academic Team, as announced by the conference on Tuesday morning. UC San Diego earned the third most honorees of the Big West institutions with UC Irvine leading the way at 59, while UC Davis received 56 selections.
 
To be eligible, student-athletes must carry a minimum grade point average of 3.00, be at least a sophomore academically with one full year at the institution, and have competed in 50 percent of the team's contests, with the exception of cross country student-athletes. In the sport of cross country, a student-athlete must have competed in either 50 percent of the institution's events or participated in the Conference Championship.

A total of 407 scholar-athletes who compete in the fall sports of men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer, and women's volleyball across The Big West were honored for their work in the classroom and on the playing field. 

Additionally, UC San Diego had five scholar-athletes earn 4.0 GPA's during the fall semester as four women's cross country (Emma Dunmire, Stella Gladden, Jenna Satovsky and Isabelle Shepherd) and one men's water polo (Brendon Fezzey) scholar-athlete earned the special designation. 

By sport, women's soccer had by far the most honorees with 126 student-athletes named to the team. Men's soccer had 84, followed by women's cross country with 66, women's volleyball with 56, men's cross country with 45 and wrapping up with 42 selections for men's water polo. 

Trailing UC San Diego in total all-academic recipients were UC Santa Barbara (53), Cal Poly (34), UC Riverside (32), CSUN (29), Cal State Fullerton (24), Hawai'i (23) with CSU Bakersfield and Long Beach State (21) rounding out the rest of the Academic All-Conference team.

About UC San Diego Athletics
After two decades as one of the most successful programs in NCAA Division II, the UC San Diego intercollegiate athletics program began a new era in 2020 as a member of The Big West in NCAA Division I. The 23-sport Tritons earned 30 team and nearly 150 individual national championships during its time in Divisions II and III and helped guide 1,400 scholar-athletes to All-America honors. A total of 84 Tritons have earned Academic All-America honors, while 38 have earned prestigious NCAA Post Graduate Scholarships. UC San Diego scholar-athletes exemplify the academic ideals of one of the world's preeminent institutions, graduating at an average rate of 91 percent, one of the highest rates among institutions at all divisions.
