HOW IT HAPPENED
Starting things off on the UC San Diego campus was the doubles point that was played in a clinch format with the top two Cougar duos each emerging victorious as the Tritons' pairing of Carson Lee and Zach Pellouchoud had their match ended with them even at five apiece against their BYU opponents.

Turning our attention to singles, the Tritons earned their two points on the afternoon courtesy of both Diogo Tinoco and Charles Qian who each won their singles matches playing at the third and sixth spots on the lineup respectively.

QUOTABLE
"Today was a tough start to the season against a strong BYU team," UC San Diego head men's tennis coach Timmer Willing said. "We hung in on a few matches but weren't quite to form, especially mentally. As expected we were a little tight in the beginning of the new season. We need to be better at adapting and less negative self talk as our immaturity showed a little today. The good news is we get two chances tomorrow against a great team. I'm sure we will be much better tomorrow."

TRITON TIDBITS
  • Qian's win today marks his second straight singles victory dating back to last season when he earned a victory against his opponent from The Citadel last May in Georgia.
  • A pair of Triton freshmen made their collegiate debuts on Saturday afternoon as Lee and Pellouchoud paired up in doubles for a 5-5 draw before coming up just short in their singles matches.

UP NEXT
The Tritons will now head east for a Sunday full of action in the Grand Canyon state with a doubleheader against the #16 Arizona Wildcats beginning at 8:00 a.m. PST from the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center in Tucson.
