Tritons Earn Home Draw Against Roadrunners in Big West Opener

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Kicking off conference action for the 2023 season, the UC San Diego Tritons (1-4-3, 0-0-1) picked up a 1-1 draw against the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners (1-5-2, 0-0-1) on a cool, comfortable Thursday night from Triton Soccer Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first 30 minutes of action saw each team feeling their opponent out in the opening night of Big West play.

UC San Diego showcased their offensive creativity throughout the first half, dominating possession on the Roadrunners' side of the field as both Kennedy Carter and Camryn Borg each recorded the first two shots of the night for the home squad.

With just under 15 minutes remaining in the first half, the Tritons were able to break through with the first goal of the match as Lindsey Park found the back of the cage for her first time in 2023 off a pretty feed from Alexis Nguyen to make it 1-0.
Heading into the half, UC San Diego out shot Cal State Bakersfield six to one, recorded three corners to the Roadrunners one, while committing six fewer fouls than their opponent.

Returning to play for the second half, the visiting Roadrunners were able to even the score at the 52-minute mark as Cal State Bakersfield forward Jette Zimmer scored on a set play to make it 1-all.

Making her first appearance in four matches, Raquel Kalpakoff helped the Tritons earn a free kick after being fouled just outside of the box around the 71st minute mark.

Both defenses held strong in the final 20 minutes of action as both programs earned the draw as UC San Diego keeper Keara Fitzgerald finished her evening with three saves.

QUOTABLE
"We saw major improvement with the team dynamic tonight," Tritons head coach Kristin Jones '04 said. "I thought the energy from the start in the first half was a testament to the preparation, and focus the girls had going in. They looked at Sunday as a chance to reset after that performance. I think the first half was as good as we've played all year. I wish we could've created a couple of more clear-cut chances, because I think that was an opportunity to put the game away."

On the second half of play, Jones said, "Testament to Bakersfield, they came out and worked hard. They were picking up a lot of 50-50's that they weren't in the first half and they got themselves back in the game. After everything is said and done the tie might be a good result, we'll walk away with the point and now move forward in the Big West."

TRITON TIDBITS
  • With her set up to Park in the first half, Nguyen now moves into the team lead with her second assist of the season and is now ranked fourth on her team with a pair of points this season.
  • After missing the previous four matches due to an injury, UC San Diego's leading goal scorer Kalpakoff made her return to action recording two shots on goal, and totaling 30 minutes off the bench.
  • Tonight's match marked the third consecutive year where the match ended in a draw for the Big West foes.
  • Temperature at kickoff was a cool 67 degrees with a light breeze in La Jolla.
UP NEXT
The Tritons will now enjoy a week away from game action before traveling north to Malibu for their final non-conference match of the season, when they'll face off with the Pepperdine Waves on Thursday, Sept. 21 at 3:00 p.m. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+ with live stats available on UCSDTritons.com.
