Softball Wraps 2023 Season at Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – UC San Diego softball was held to two hits in the finale of the 2023 season vs. Cal Poly. The Mustangs tallied one run over seven innings and held the Tritons at bay for the shutout victory.
 
The Tritons finish their season at 19-33 overall and 9-18 in Big West play while the Mustangs finish at 19-23 overall and 12-15 in Big West play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Cal Poly's ace blanked the Tritons after striking out nine batters with only two hits and two walks. UC San Diego left five runners on over the seven innings and threatened twice throughout.
 
Threatening in the top of the fourth, Marissa Hassis became the lead runner after walking. Keila Bosinger then laced a single through the left field to reach and advance Hassis to second. Bobbi Aguirre then reached on a fielder's choice that tagged Hassis out at third. Both Bosinger and Aguirre were left stranded.
 
A similar situation came up in the fifth when Sophia Real punched a lead-off single through the left side to become the lead runner. Two Tritons struck out swinging before pinch hitter, Teagan Dobson battled through 11 pitches to win with a walk. Pinch runner Mariah Melendez was advanced to second with Dobson on first. Both Tritons were stranded once again as the third out was tallied.
 
Cal Poly's lone run came during the bottom of the fourth when two Mustang doubles back-to-back got the runner on and then brought them in.
 
TRITON TIDBITS
  • This was the final game of the 2023 season for the Tritons as they continue the transition to Division I athletics and are still ineligible for NCAA postseason competition.
  • No Tritons were able to tally a hit in all three games.
  • Jada Cecil gave up one hit but shutout the Mustangs in three innings of work with two strikeouts.
  • Kaia Simpson allowed three hits with one run and a walk.
