Long Ball Sparks Tritons to Series Win Against Titans

UC San Diego five home runs—a game record for the Division I era

FULLERTON, Calif.—UC San Diego baseball defeated Cal State Fullerton, 11-2, to secure the series victory on Saturday evening at Goodwin Field. The Tritons (29-18, 17-9 Big West) hit five home runs in the contest—a Division I program record—and improved to 7-4 in the all-time series with the Titans (28-18, 17-6 Big West) as well as 2-0 in the weekend series. It is the first conference series loss of the season for Cal State Fullerton.

Doyle Kane finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored—including his first home run as a Triton. Ryson Ujimori also knocked his first home run as a Triton, hitting two in the contest and finishing 2-for-3 with two walks, two RBI and three runs scored. Matt Halbach went 1-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored and Michael Fuhrman finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Starter Michael Mitchell (3-1) earned the victory, pitching 5.0 shutout innings and allowing four hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons got on the board early, scoring on a passed ball in the top of the first inning. UC San Diego added a run in the third on an Ujimori solo home run to straight away center field—the first of his collegiate career—to lead 2-0.

UC San Diego did most of its damage in the top of the fourth, scoring six runs on five hits. Fuhrman got the inning going with a leadoff home run—his second of the series. The Tritons then loaded the bases with two outs for Halbach who knocked the third grand slam of the season for UC San Diego. The Tritons batted around and Fuhrman capped the inning with his second RBI, a single up the middle to make it 8-0.

An inning later, Ujimori hit his second home run of the contest—this time to right field—to extend the lead 9-0.

The Titans got their only runs of the game in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two on a two-out homer. However, UC San Diego answered the next inning, getting both runs back on a two-out two-run home run of their own. This time it was Kane doing the damage for the Tritons, knocking his first homer of the season—and first as a Triton—to build back the nine-run lead, 11-2.

Cal State Fullerton threatened in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, loading the bases on a pair of singles and a walk. Reliever Nolan McCracken recorded the final strikeout on a 3-2 pitch—his third strikeout of the inning—to secure the victory and the series for UC San Diego.
