Third Big West Series Sweep for the Tritons

UC San Diego defeated UC Davis, 13-4, on Saturday afternoon to sweep the series

LA JOLLA, Calif.—UC San Diego baseball earned the series sweep over UC Davis with a 13-4 victory on Saturday afternoon in Triton Ballpark. The Tritons (20-9, 10-2 Big West) recorded their third conference series sweep and fourth sweep of the season, improving to 7-3 in Division I against the Aggies (10-17, 3-9 Big West).
 
Crew Robinson led the team with four RBI, finishing 1-for-1 with a three-run home run, a sac-fly and a walk. Doyle Kane went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored and Patrick Hackworth finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Michael Fuhrman and Brock Kleszcz also recorded home runs in the contest, finishing with two RBI each.
 
Ethan Holt (3-1) earned the victory out of the bullpen, allowing just one hit in his 2.2 shutout innings. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
UC Davis threatened with the bases loaded in the top of the second, but Seth Sumner struck out the side to keep the game scoreless early. The Aggies broke through two innings later, hanging two runs on the board to take the early, 2-0, lead.
 
The Tritons responded immediately, scoring five runs in the bottom of the inning. UC San Diego loaded the bases with one out and Nick Costello drew a walk to bring in the first run for the Tritons. Kleszcz sent a sac-fly to center field to tie the game at 2-all and Robinson sent a three-run homer over the fence in right field to give the Tritons the 5-2 lead.
 
UC San Diego added a run in the fourth on an RBI single from Kane and a run in the fifth with a leadoff home run by Kleszcz. Robinson brought in his fourth RBI of the game in the bottom of the sixth with a sac-fly to make it 8-2. 
 
The Tritons added two runs in the seventh with a sac-fly by Matt Halbach and an RBI single by Kane, and tacked on three more in the eighth with an RBI single by Bradlee Preap and a two-run homer by Fuhrman. 
 
UC San Diego scored at least one run in each of the final six innings to build a commanding, 13-2, lead.
 
The Aggies got two runs back in the top of the ninth, but the Tritons came away with the series finale victory for their fourth sweep of the season.
 
TRITON TIDBITS
  • It was the third Big West sweep for the Tritons who sit alone in first place at 10-2. 
  • Fuhrman, Kleszcz and Robinson homered in the contest.
  • Fuhrman, Kane, Kleszcz and Robinson all collected multiple RBI in the contest.
  • The Tritons improved to 7-3 in the D-I series and 10-17 all-time against UC Davis.
