Cecil Shuts Out Beach in Series Opener

Jada Cecil tossed seven innings with one hit, no runs, no walks, and five strikeouts

LONG BEACH, Calif. – UC San Diego topped Long Beach State in the series opener on Friday, April 7 with a 2-0 victory behind the shutout pitching from Jada Cecil.

Tossing her eighth complete game of the season, Jada Cecil one-hit the Beach over seven innings of work. The right-hander gave up no runs or walks and fanned five opponents of the 25 batters she faced. Cecil ended the night with a 0.00 ERA after forcing 11 flyouts and five groundouts.

At the plate, Clarissa Reynoso's walk turned into the first run scored by the Tritons when Reilly Erickson pinch ran for Reynoso and scored on a wild pitch. Keila Bosinger's lone hit of the night was an RBI double that brought Morgan Eng home for the insurance run. Bobbi Aguirre was 2-for-4 at the plate with Sophia Real going 2-for-2 with a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Before the Tritons struck in the sixth inning, Morgan Eng snatched a foul ball over the fence to cut the Beach's fifth inning short with the foul flyout.

Bobbi Aguirre got the sixth inning started when she bunted to reach. Kelley Renner came in as a pinch runner for Aguirre. The Beach proceeded to walk Clarissa Reynoso and advanced Renner to second. Reilly Erickson replaced Reynoso at first as a pinch runner. Sophia Real was then walked by the Beach to load the bases. A fielder's choice tagged Renner out at home but allowed Gabby Williams to reach and keep the bases loaded. During Zoe Richard's at-bat a wild pitch came in shooting to the backstop which allowed Erickson to sprint home and score.

In the bottom of the inning, Jada Cecil went three up, three down for the fourth time.

Eng became the lead runner in the seventh inning when she laced a single to the third baseman and beat out the throw. She proceeded to steal second and move into scoring position. Facing two outs, Keila Bosinger smoked a double to the left center fence for the RBI standup double as Eng rounded third and scored the Triton's insurance run.

Ending the seventh, Cecil set down the Beach in order to seal the victory.
