UC San Diego Drops Series to UC Riverside

LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC San Diego drops the series to UC Riverside after falling in both games of the Saturday afternoon doubleheader. The Tritons were shut out in game one, 6-0, and fell by a narrow margin in game two of 2-1.
 
UC San Diego drops to 18-28 overall and 8-13 in conference play. The Highlanders improve to 20-27 overall and 6-15 in Big West play.
 
Lefty Shelby Thompson got the start in the circle for the Tritons. She allowed five runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Gabby Williams came on in as relief and allowed one run on two hits with three strikeouts and one walk. The lefty duo combined for 109 pitches and 66 strikes.

The Tritons were shutout in game one of the doubleheader and were only able to record four hits. Sophia Real led the team going 2-for-3. Morgan Eng and Bobbi Aguirre record the other two lone hits. The Tritons grounded out 10 times with four striking out.
 
Tossing her 12th complete game, Jada Cecil held the Highlanders to two runs on seven hits with three walks and a season high of 140 pitches. The right-hander forced seven flyouts and three groundouts. 85 of her 140 pitches were strikes.
 
At the plate, Sophia Real led the Tritons again, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Keila Bosinger was the lone Triton scorer. Morgan Eng, Mikaila Pancino, and Lily Hermosillo all recorded a hit. In game two, the Tritons left five runners on base.

UC RIVERSIDE 6, UC SAN DIEGO 0
The Tritons were shutout in all seven innings by the Highlanders. With the four Tritons who reached, three made it into scoring position with two stranded at third. Hitting a double in the second, Bobbi Aguirre was advanced to third on a groundout, but was stranded as the final out was punched. On a single, Morgan Eng was able to reach third after stealing two bases back-to-back in the third. In the fourth, Sophia Real powered a two-out double to left center. Both Eng and Real were left stranded with Aguirre.
 
UC Riverside scored 2-1-2 in the third, fourth, and fifth. Their final run came in the top of the seventh.
 
UC RIVERSIDE 2, UC SAN DIEGO 1
UC Riverside struck first with two runs in the top of the fourth inning after three scoreless innings for both teams. The Tritons responded in the bottom of the same inning with a single run. Keila Bosinger was walked by the Highlander pitching staff to become the lead runner. Bobbi Aguirre then advanced Bosinger into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. On two outs, Sophia Real powered a hard-hit single to left center to plate Bosinger, bringing the Tritons within one, 2-1.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, a Highlander error gave the Tritons a second chance with the tying run on first. UC San Diego was unable to convert and fell 2-1 to UCR.
 
TRITON TIDBITS
  • Jada Cecil tossed her 12th complete game of the season with 11 batters fanned. She stranded 10 of the Highlander runners.
  • Sophia Real was 4-for-6 with an RBI on the day.
  • Morgan Eng recorded a hit and stolen base in each game of the doubleheader.
  • Lily Hermosillo catched both games of the doubleheader and recorded the first double of her collegiate career.
  • This is the third doubleheader that the Tritons have been swept in this season.
  • UC San Diego falls behind in the all-time vs. series against UC Riverside at 4-5.
     
UP NEXT
UC San Diego will conclude their home season at Triton Softball Field with a three-game series vs. CSUN. The series begins on Friday, May 5 for a single nightcap, followed by a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm. All games will be live on ESPN+ with live stats available on ucsdtritons.com. The seven Triton seniors will be honored after the conclusion of the doubleheader.
