Tritons Rally Late to Take Series

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Taking the game into extra innings, UC San Diego defeated UC Davis, 4-3, in a Sunday morning rubber match on April 23.

The Tritons improve to 17-26 overall and 7-11 in Big West play. UC Davis moves to 25-14 overall and 11-7 in the Big West.

Tossing her 11th complete game of the season, sophomore ace, Jada Cecil allowed three runs on seven hits with three walks. Holding the Aggies to two earned runs and one unearned, the right-hander fanned nine batters to even her record to 9-9 after the win.

At the plate, Morgan Eng led with a 3-for-4 performance and a run scored. Adding support, Keila Bosinger was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. Hailey Mulligan was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a run batted in. Both Alexa DeMarse and Mariah Melendez recorded a run. Zoe Richard tallied an RBI with Bobbi Aguirre going 2-for-4 at the plate.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Aggies led the game for four innings at 2-0. In the fifth, the Tritons struck to pull within one of their host. Mariah Melendez became the go-ahead run as she laced a single through the left side. On a wild pitch from UCD, Melendez moved into scoring position. Hailey Mulligan came up to the plate with only one out on the board and powered her own single through the right side, giving Melendez time to score.

UC Davis responded in the bottom with another run to pull ahead to 3-1. The Tritons threatened in the sixth without success and Jada Cecil tallied two strikeouts and forced a pop up to retire the side to keep UC San Diego within two.

The Tritons rallied in the top of the seventh to tie the game. Mulligan was walked to start the inning and was advanced to second by Morgan Eng who laced a single through the left side. While Keila Bosinger was at the plate, Mulligan and Eng both advanced bases to sit on third and second. Bosinger powered a single out to center field to plate Mulligan and Eng to tie at 3-3.

Cecil retired the side in order again to send the game into extra innings. The sophomore struck out another two Aggies before forcing a flyout.

Clarissa Reynoso led off the inning for the Tritons and was dealt four balls from the UCD pitching staff to become the winning run at first. Alexa DeMarse came in for Reynoso as a pinch runner and was advanced to second by a sac bunt from Sophia Real. Zoe Richards stepped up to the plate an knocked a long single to the left field to plate DeMarse and take the lead, 4-3.

Cecil fanned another two Aggies in the bottom of the eighth and UCD responded with a single before another was walked. With two outs on the board, Cecil and the Triton defense shut the door on the victory as the game ended when Eng caught a foul-flyout in left field.
