Tritons Fall in Game Two to Gauchos

UC San Diego dropped a 10-3 decision to UC Santa Barbara on Saturday

LA JOLLA, Calif.—UC San Diego baseball fell to UC Santa Barbara 10-3, in game two of the weekend series on Saturday afternoon in Triton Ballpark. The Tritons (22-14, 11-6 Big West) moved to 1-10 in the Division I series with the Gauchos (24-12, 9-5 Big West).
 
Michael Fuhrman finished 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Matt Halbach went 3-for-4. Emiliano Gonzalez led the team with two RBI, finishing 1-for-4 while Ryson Ujimori went 1-for-2 with a pinch-hit RBI single and a run scored.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gauchos got on the board early, batting around in the top of the first and scoring five runs on three hits. UCSB added another run in the top of the second with a solo homer to build a 6-0 lead.
 
The Tritons got their first opportunity in the bottom of the third, loading the bases with two outs but they were unable to bring in a run. 
 
UC Santa Barbara added another run in the fifth with its second leadoff home run of the ballgame to make it 7-0. UC San Diego threatened again in the bottom of the inning, advancing two runners into scoring position with two outs but the Tritons came up empty-handed once again.
 
The Gauchos added three more runs in the top of the sixth to extend their lead 10-0.
 
UC San Diego was finally able to break through in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs on four hits. Ujimori brought in the first run of the day with an RBI infield single and a two-RBI single by Gonzalez to make it 3-10. The Tritons threatened for more with two on and one out but Bradlee Preap lined into a double-play to end the inning.
 
In the eighth, UCSB advanced a runner to third with one out but a strikeout and a fielder's choice retired the Gauchos without a run.
 
The Tritons got a runner on with two outs in the ninth but were unable to cut into the deficit, falling 10-3. 
 
TRITON TIDBITS
  • Michael Fuhrman and Matt Halbach turned in multi-hit performances for the Tritons.
  • Emiliano Gonzalez and Ryson Ujimori were credited with RBI in the contest.
  • UC San Diego stranded nine runners, compared to 15 for UCSB. 
  • The Tritons moved to 1-10 in the Division I series and 1-13 in the all-time series with UCSB.
