HONOLULU—UC San Diego baseball defeated Hawai'i, 11-2, in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium. The Tritons (22-12, 11-4 Big West) avoided a sweep by the Rainbow Warriors (16-13, 5-6 Big West) and improved to 4-6 in the all-time series.
Brandon Larson led the Tritons offensively, going 3-for-5 with six RBI and a run scored—tying the program's Division I record for runs batted in which he set earlier this season.
Crew Robinson finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and
Doyle Kane also tallied two RBI on the day.
UC San Diego tallied 13 hits in the contest, while holding UH to just five hits.
Nic Gregson (4-1) was credited with the victory, with 5.0 innings in relief, allowing two runs on four hits with five strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons were quick to score, plating two runs in the top of the first on RBI singles from Larson and Robinson. UC San Diego added four more runs in the second, highlighted by a two-RBI single by Larson and another RBI single by Robinson to make it 6-0.
UC San Diego scored two more runs in the sixth with an RBI single by Kane and a bases-loaded wild pitch to make it, 8-0.
The Tritons held UH hitless through the first 5.1 innings, facing one batter over the minimum before giving up two runs on four hits in the sixth to make it 8-2.
UC San Diego responded right away, scoring three runs in the seventh on a bases-loaded triple by Larson to build the lead to 11-2.
Gregson and
Izaak Martinez allowed just one base runner in the seventh and eighth and Martinez retired the Bows in order in the ninth to secure the victory for the Tritons.
