Tritons Celebrate Seniors but Fall to Fullerton in Season Finale

UC San Diego dropped an 83-67 decision on Saturday afternoon

LA JOLLA, Calif.–UC San Diego San Diego women's basketball fell to Cal State Fullerton, 83-67, on Saturday afternoon in LionTree Arena. The Tritons (13-17, 10-10 Big West) wrapped up their third season of Division I competition but were unable to come away with the win against the Titans (13-15, 8-11 Big West) on Senior Day.
 
Seniors Sydney Brown, Emily Cangelosi and Julia Macabuhay all scored in double-figures, led by Brown with 25 points. Cangelosi finished with 19 points, Macabuhay added 10 and Bridget Mullings chipped in 12 for UC San Diego. Brown also led the team in rebounds with seven and Cangelosi and Mullings added five. Izzy Forsyth and Parker Montgomery led the team with three assists each and Mullings finished with two blocked shots.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind early, 7-2, to open the first quarter the Tritons put together a 15-3 run to take the lead 17-10. CSUF knocked down a pair of free throws in the final seconds but UC San Diego still took a 17-12 lead into the first quarter break.
 
The momentum swung in favor of the Titans to begin the second period, with CSUF going on an 18-6 run to retake the lead, 30-23. The Tritons countered with a 8-2 run to cut the deficit to one, 31-32, but Fullerton closed out the period with three consecutive three-pointers to take a 41-31 lead into halftime.
 
The Titans continued to have the hot hand in the second half, hitting another three to open the third quarter and put together a 17-3 run to build their largest lead of the contest. Brown took control for the Tritons, who went on a 10-5 scoring run all credited to the fifth-year forward. Cangelosi hit another three in the final 30 seconds, but the Titans still took a 66-47 lead into the final quarter break.
 
The Tritons carried the momentum into the final period with a 15-5 run to cut the deficit to 11 with 3:17 to play. UC San Diego continued to battle but was unable to pull any closer, falling 83-67 in the final game of the 2022-23 season.
