LA JOLLA, Calif.—UC San Diego baseball improved to 2-0 in Big West play with a dominating 14-2 victory over Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon in Triton Ballpark. The Tritons (11-6, 2-0 Big West) recorded 12 hits—their 11th game with 10+ hits—while holding the Dirtbags (10-7, 0-2 Big West) to just three hits in the contest.
Michael Fuhrman and
Emiliano Gonzalez led the way offensively for the Tritons. Fuhrman finished 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and two runs scored, while Gonzalez also finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and a home run.
Nic Gregson (3-0) earned the victory in his second start of the year, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing the only two runs—both solo homers—and recording four strikeouts and two walks.
Zack Ernisse earned his first save of the season, pitching 4.0 shutout innings in relief and allowing one hit and one walk with four strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons struck first with a sac-fly by
Crew Robinson in the bottom of the second for a 1-0 lead. However, the Dirtbags responded in the top of the third with a solo home run to tie the game 1-1.
Long Beach State took the lead in the top of the fifth with its second solo home run of the day to make it 2-1.
The Triton offense came alive in the fifth inning, plating three runs on the Fuhrman homer to right-center field to retake the lead, 4-2. It was the first home run of the season for the redshirt senior.
UC San Diego went on to score at least one run in each of the final three innings, beginning in the sixth with Gonzalez's solo homer to right. The Tritons scored five more runs in the seventh, highlighted by
Matt Halbach's two-RBI triple—his fifth of the season—and Gonzalez's two-RBI single to make it 10-2.
The Tritons added four more runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by a pinch-hit RBI single for
Nick Costello and an RBI double by
Colton Lomanto—his first collegiate hit for the Tritons.
