51 Tritons Named to Fall Big West All-Academic Team

IRVINE, Calif.—UC San Diego had 51 scholar-athletes named to The Big West Fall All-Academic Team, as announced Tuesday by the conference. The Tritons had the second most honorees, just behind UC Santa Barbara with 54. 
 
To be eligible, student-athletes must carry a minimum grade point average of 3.00, be at least a sophomore academically with one full year at the institution, and have competed in 50 percent of the team's contests, with the exception of cross country student-athletes. In the sport of cross country, a student-athlete must have competed in either 50 percent of the institution's events or participated in the Conference Championship.
 
A total of 409 scholar-athletes who compete in the fall sports of men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer, and women's volleyball across The Big West were honored for their work in the classroom and on the playing field. 
 
By sport, women's soccer had by far the most honorees with 119 student-athletes named to the team. Women's cross country had 88, followed by men's soccer and women's volleyball, each with 76. Men's cross country rounded out the rest of the sports with 50.
 
Trailing the Tritons in total all-academic picks were UC Irvine (51), Cal Poly (45), UC Davis (44) who all had over 40 honorees. Additionally, Cal State Fullerton (38), UC Riverside (31), Long Beach State (23), CSUN (22), Hawai'i (22) and CSU Bakersfield (18) rounded out the rest of the Academic All-Conference Team.

About UC San Diego Athletics
After two decades as one of the most successful programs in NCAA Division II, the UC San Diego intercollegiate athletics program has begun a new era as a member of The Big West Conference in NCAA Division I. The 23-sport Tritons earned 30 team and nearly 150 individual national championships during its time in Divisions II and III and helped guide 1,400 scholar-athletes to All-America honors. A total of 83 Tritons have earned Academic All-America honors, while 38 have garnered prestigious NCAA Post Graduate Scholarships.
