Tritons Finish Competition at Mary Nutter Classic

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – On the final day of the Mary Nutter Classic, UC San Diego dropped both games. Falling to No. 24 Oregon 2-1 in the morning, the Tritons then fell to Loyola Marymount 11-2 in the afternoon.
 
UC San Diego drops to 7-9 while Oregon improves to 12-3 and LMU moves to 7-10. Wrapping up competition at the Mary Nutter Classic, the Tritons went 1-4.
 
In game one, Jada Cecil tossed a complete game fanning four Ducks with two walks, nine fly outs, and seven ground outs. The right-hander allowed two runs on two hits over her seven innings of work, tossing 126 pitches. At the plate, Deena Pederson was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
 
Shelby Thompson got the start in game two allowing seven runs with four earned over 1.2 innings of work. Kai Simpson came on as relief to shutout LMU for 2.1 innings of work with no hits and three strikeouts. Claire Adams made her first appearance in the circle giving up four runs on four hits with three walks. Gabby Williams finished in the circle allowing no hits or walks with a strikeout. At the plate, Bobbi Aguirre was 2-for-2 with a run scored.
 
NO. 24 OREGON 2, UC SAN DIEGO 1
After defeating three top 25 teams over the weekend at Mary Nutter, Jada Cecil held Oregon to two runs on seven hits. The Ducks struck first with a lone run in the top of the second.
 
The Tritons responded in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 1-1. Deena Pederson laced a single through the left side to become the lead runner. Facing two outs, the Ducks hit Keila Bosinger allowing her to reach. Pinch hitter Georgia Heathcock reached on an error by Oregon's third baseman, allowing Pederson to score. UC San Diego stranded Heathcock and Bosinger.
 
The winning run for the Ducks came in the seventh inning and the Tritons were unable to respond in the bottom of the seventh.
 
LMU 11, UC SAN DIEGO 2
LMU struck first in the first two innings with seven runs total. The Tritons responded in the bottom of the first with a single run.
 
As two Tritons were walked, Deena Pederson and Bobbi Aguirre each stole a base and then on a throwing error, Aguirre reached third and Pederson scored. Clarissa Reynoso was able to reach after being walked, but the runners on the corners were stranded.
 
The Tritons added another run in the bottom of the third. Aguirre was the lead runner once again after lacing a single through the left side. Keila Bosinger advanced Aguirre after reaching on an error. Facing two outs, Marissa Hassis laced a single up the middle to plate Aguirre and advance Bosinger. Both Hassis and Bosinger were stranded.
 
LMU pulled away in the top of the fifth with another four runs, ending the game in five innings.
 
TRITON TIDBITS
  • Jada Cecil tossed her second complete game of the season with four strikeouts, nine fly outs and seven ground outs.
  • Against LMU, Bobbi Aguirre was 2-for-2 with a run scored.
  • Claire Adams appeared for the first time in the circle for the gold and blue against LMU.
  • Over the five games, Gabby Williams led the Tritons at the plate batting a .400 average with a run scored with three RBI.
  • Keila Bosinger and Deena Pederson each scored three runs over the five games.
