Ninth Inning Homer Costly Against WSU

UC San Diego fell to the Cougars, 3-2, on Sunday evening

LA JOLLA, Calif.—UC San Diego fell to Washington State, 3-2, after a solo homerun in the ninth inning gave the Cougars the lead on Sunday evening in Triton Ballpark. It was the Tritons' (2-4) first-ever meeting with the Cougars (6-1) and second game of the Tony Gwynn Legacy weekend.

Michael Fuhrman recorded the only two RBI for the Tritons and finished the night 1-for-3. Patrick Hackworth went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Matt Halbach finished 2-for-5 with a run scored. Each team tallied six hits, but the Tritons stranded 11 baserunners in the contest, compared to six for WSU.

Ryan Forcucci had a perfect game through the first 5.2 innings, retiring 17 consecutive batters with six strikeouts and no walks before giving up two runs on two hits in his second start of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons were quick to strike in the bottom of the first inning, loading the bases for Fuhrman who hit a two-RBI double to the wall in center field to give UC San Diego the 2-0 lead.

Forcucci was dominant on the mound, retiring the first 17 batters in order. A base hit by the Cougars in the top of the sixth with two outs broke up the perfect game for the sophomore right-hander and WSU hung two runs on the board to tie the game, 2-2.

The Tritons threatened an inning later, advancing a runner to third with two outs in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to bring in a run.

With the game still knotted heading into the ninth, the Cougars got the go-ahead run on a solo homer to make it 3-2.

With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Halbach singled to left to bring the winning run to the plate. It looked as if the inning would be extended when Doyle Kane hit a shallow fly ball to left center, but a diving catch by the WSU centerfielder ended the threat and secured the victory for the Cougars.
