LA JOLLA, Calif.– UC San Diego women's basketball defeated Life Pacific, 88-32, on Wednesday morning in LionTree Arena. The Tritons (1-1) earned their first victory of the season, moving to 1-0 in the all-time series with Life Pacific.
Izzy Forsyth led the Tritons with 17 points, while three other Tritons finished in double-figures.
Damilola Sule recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds in her UC San Diego debut, while
Gracie Gallegos and
Eri Blithikioti both finished with 12 points apiece.
Katie Springs tallied a career-best 16 rebounds including seven offensive boards. Blithikioti led UC San Diego defensively with four steals and four blocked shots.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons jumped out to a 10-0 lead to open the contest, shooting 50 percent from the field in the opening period. Blithikioti and Smith led the Tritons with five points each and UC San Diego took an 18-7 lead into the first quarter break.
UC San Diego maintained a 13-point lead midway through the second quarter before the Tritons put together a 7-0 scoring run to extend their lead, 36-16.
Parker Montgomery hit a three in the final minute and the Tritons took a 39-18 lead into the halftime break.
Both teams got off to a slow start offensively to begin the second half, with just three buckets in the opening four minutes. With UC San Diego leading 42-22, the Tritons shut out the Warriors in the remaining six minutes of the quarter. UC San Diego put together a 17-point scoring run to close out the quarter, led by
Gracie Gallegos with seven points. The Tritons took a 59-22 lead into the final quarter break.
UC San Diego remained hot to begin the final period, outscoring LPU 14-3 to extend its lead, 73-25. The Tritons closed out the fourth quarter with a 10-point scoring run, including three consecutive baskets by Sule and cruised to the 88-32 victory.
