Pair of Goals Push Tritons Over Gauchos

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Following a three week break away from their home pitch, the UC San Diego Tritons (3-6-3, 2-1-1 Big West) earned an impressive 2-1 victory against the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (3-4-7, 1-3-2) at Triton Soccer Stadium, on a beautiful Thursday night in Southern California.

HOW IT HAPPENED
On a lovely night under the lights in La Jolla, both offenses wasted little time to get on the scoreboard.

The visiting Gauchos opened the scoring on Thursday night as Malnuri Alwis found the back of the net at the 12-minute mark to give her team the early lead.

Trailing but not deterred, UC San Diego was able to battle back before halftime as Kennedy Carter added her second goal of the season following an exceptional pass from Alexis Nguyen with 23 minutes remaining in the first half.

Seeking to break the tie following a foul in the box, the Tritons looked to their keeper to come up with a big play to preserve the score. Keara Fitzgerald made sure to take care of the rest with this impressive save to keep the score at 1-all heading into the break.

Coming out of halftime, both teams tried to generate chances but couldn't find the back of the net until the Tritons took control of the game for good.

Following a booming kick from Fitzgerald down the middle of the field, Carter corralled the loose ball and streaked down the field with all the Gaucho defenders behind her as she found the back of the net and put UC San Diego ahead for good.

The Triton defense held on the rest of the way to put the match away for good as UC San Diego moved to above .500 in Big West play.
