SAN DIEGO – UC San Diego senior
Ashlynn Kolarik scored on a header in the 39th minute and junior
Kennedy Carter netted the equalizer with just 101 seconds to play as the visiting Tritons battled host San Diego State to a 2-2 draw atop the SDSU Sports Deck on Sunday night.
The Aztecs are now 2-1-3 while the Tritons are 1-3-1 following Sunday night's tie. The match was UC San Diego's first regulation tie under the new NCAA rule that removed overtime periods from regular season contests.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UC San Diego fired off a season-best nine shots – seven on goal – in the first half. In the 39th minute, freshman
Talisa Lin played the ball in from near midfield where Kolarik was streaking down the left side. Her header found the far corner of the net to give the visitors a late first half lead.
The Tritons pressured SDSU keeper Alexa Madueno throughout the first half, peppering her with shots over the first 45. Maudueno made six saves. UC San Diego's seven shots on goal in the first half matched a season high for any game so far this season.
In the second half, momentum turned quickly following a pair of tough yellow cards on UC San Diego. Captain
Kennedy Carter was issued a card in the 50th minute and in the 54' San Diego State tied the match on a Logan Nidy score. Moments later, UC San Diego keeper
Keara Fitzgerald made a terrific diving save but she was issued a card after the play. That set up a PK in the 55' for SDSU's Kiera Utush. She converted the penalty kick to give San Diego State a 2-1 lead.
The Tritons had a couple of good looks late and finally broke through with
Kennedy Carter's equalizer at 88:19. The score was Carter's first of the season and the sixth of her career.
UC San Diego's 14 shots matched a season best.
