Tritons Drop Big West Opener to UC Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Opening Big West play on Wednesday night, the Tritons fell to pre-season favorite, UC Santa Barbara 1-0 in a midweek matchup on the road.

The Tritons drop to 4-4-2 overall and 0-1 in the Big West while the Gauchos advance to 6-2-2 overall and 1-0 in the Big West.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams remained scoreless through the beginning of the first half as the Tritons' defense thwarted the Gauchos' attacks five different times. UC San Diego recorded two shots to the Gauchos' six, two of which were on target. Dominic Peters made two big stops to keep the score even before the Gauchos were able to go up on the Tritons in the 24th minute when they converted a penalty kick.

In the second half, the Tritons came out pressing the Gauchos looking for their equalizer. UC San Diego let loose five shots with three on target. Max Carvalho took two shots in the second with one on goal. Nick Cirrito sent a ball out to the right field goal line as Noah Sonenstein ran it down to send the cross back to Cirrito, whose chipped shot was deflected out by the UCSB goalie. Alan Kim took a rebound and aimed the ball for the left bottom corner through traffic but was stopped at the last minute from crossing the goal line. In the final minute of play, Carter Jacobus sent a shot wide in a final attempt to equalize.

Earning three yellow cards and five fouls in the second 45 minutes, the Tritons' aggressive play was unable to overcome the Gauchos' lone goal.

QUOTABLE
With the shot deficit of the first half being 6 to 2, head coach Jon Pascale knew the team needed to adjust in the second half, he commented, "we knew the game wasn't coming to us, so we had to chase it down."

"We played with high intensity which created a few great chances for us, but their keeper battled to preserve the win," he added.
