Camryn Borg Goal Puts Tritons in Front But Cal Rallies for Win

BERKELEY, Calif. – UC San Diego newcomer Camryn Borg scored her first career goal early, but a strike in the 81st minute by California proved to be the difference as the host Golden Bears rallied for a 2-1 victory over the Tritons on Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium.

California improved to 2-1 on the season with the victory while the Tritons dropped to 0-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UC San Diego jumped out to a fast start, applying pressure from the opening kick. In the fourth minute, Kennedy Carter's shot was blocked, but Camryn Borg corralled the rebound and fired it into the bottom left of the net to put the Tritons on top, 1-0.

Cal tried to equalize, earning back-to-back corners in the 14th minute. On the second, the Golden Bears had a chance but UC San Diego goalkeeper Keara Fitzgerald punched the ball out of harm's way, and the Tritons cleared. The Golden Bears drew a foul just outside the 18' in the 21st minute, but the dangerous free kick did not lead to a goal. Two minutes later, UC San Diego's Allie Luo drew a yellow card leading to another free kick for Cal from about 30 yards out, but the Tritons' defense was able to clear the ball without a shot attempt.

With three minutes to go before halftime, Cal earned a corner and had a great look at the net, but Fitzgerald once again came up big, making the point-blank save at eye level to keep the Tritons on top, one-nil.

Time was winding down in the first half, and a foul was called on the Tritons inside the box with just three seconds left in the period. Cal's Keely Roy converted the penalty kick to level the score at 1-1 entering the half.

The Golden Bears out-shot the Tritons, 7-3, in the first half and drew seven corner kicks to one for UC San Diego. Fitzgerald was credited with three first half saves.

In the second half, Cal earned a breakaway in the 63rd minute but Fitzgerald made a diving stop on a shot from Ayo Oke to keep the match even. Ava D'Arcangelo drew a card in the 71st minute, setting up a Golden Bears' free kick. Cal sent it in but Talisa Lin headed the ball back out of the box, and Cal's next shot attempt from Courtney Boone sailed well high, setting up a goal kick for UC San Diego.

In the 81st minute, Roy scored her second goal of the match to give the home team a 2-1 advantage.

The Golden Bears held an 8-2 shot advantage after halftime, and 15-5 for the match. Cal earned 12 corners to four for UC San Diego. Corner kicks were 5-3 in favor of the home team after halftime.

Fitzgerald matched her season high with six saves.
