LA JOLLA, Calif.—UC San Diego baseball had three Tritons named to the 2022 All-Big West Second Team, including Marc Filia, Emiliano Gonzalez and Jalen Smith, as announced Thursday by the conference.

It is the first all-conference selection for both Filia and Gonzalez and second nod for Smith, who was a second team honoree a season ago with UC Davis.

Filia appeared in 53 games for the Tritons, making 50 starts primarily as the designated hitter. The redshirt sophomore finished third on the team with a .283 batting average, second in hits (53) and walks (25) and first in runs scored with 35.

In his first season as a Triton, Gonzalez appeared in 50 games and made 45 starts behind the plate. The redshirt freshman came on red-hot to close out the season, finishing with a team-best .312 batting average which ranked 17th overall in the Big West.

Gonzalez finished third on the team with 49 hits, second in doubles (13), and caught 11 base runners stealing, which ranked seventh in the conference.

Smith was exceptional in his first season at UC San Diego, appearing in a team-high 54 games and making 53 starts at third base. The junior transfer finished with a .305 average with seven homeruns and 34 runs batted in.

Smith led the Tritons in almost all statistical categories, including OPS (.921), at bats (203), hits (62), doubles (16), triples (3), total bases (105), slugging percentage (.517), walks (30), on-base percentage (.404) and stolen bases (7-10). Smith also ranked among the top hitters in the Big West in doubles (6th), hits (12th), triples (3rd), homeruns (10th), walks (12th), and stolen bases (12th).

The Tritons finished eighth in the Big West standings with a 13-17 conference record and series wins over Long Beach State, Cal State Fullerton, CSU Bakersfield and UC Riverside. UC San Diego will return the majority of its roster next season, while adding a host of talented newcomers as the Tritons enter their third season of Division I competition.
