LA JOLLA, Calif.—UC San Diego baseball fell to Hawai'i in the series finale, 4-0, on Sunday at Triton Ballpark. It marks the second time the Tritons have been swept in a Big West series this season.
Â
Prior to the contest, the Tritons (23-30, 12-15 Big West) celebrated their four graduating seniors,
Noah Conlon,
Blake FitzGerald,
Anthony Lucchetti and
Ryan McNally.Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams had a number of early chances, but the game stayed locked in a 0-0 tie through the first five innings.
Â
Conlon retired the first five batters he faced to begin his senior day, including three strikeouts. The Rainbow Warriors (27-21, 18-9 Big West) advanced runners into scoring position in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings, but Conlon and the Tritons were able to shut down the rally without a run each time.
Â
Similarly, the Tritons advanced a runner into scoring position in the second, fourth and fifth innings, but UC San Diego was unable to capitalize on the opportunity each time.
Â
Hawai'i was finally able to break through in the top of the sixth, scoring a runner from third on a ground-out to second to take a 1-0 lead. It looked as if the Tritons would answer in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with two outs. However, a fielder's choice ground-out to third ended the rally.
Â
UC San Diego rallied again in the seventh, putting runners on the corners with two outs but a pop-up bunt ended the inning and stalled the Tritons' momentum once again.
Â
The 'Bows tacked on an insurance run in the top of the eighth with a solo homerun and added two more in the top of the ninth to extend their lead, 4-0.
Â
In the bottom of the ninth, the Tritons got a runner on with one out, but a double play ended the last chance for UC San Diego and secured the victory for UH.
