Tritons Fall to USD in Midweek Matchup

UC San Diego dropped a 13-4 decision to the Toreros on Tuesday night

LA JOLLA, Calif.—UC San Diego baseball dropped a 13-4 decision to the University of San Diego on Tuesday night at Triton Ballpark.

The Tritons (11-17, 3-3 Big West) were led by Austin Smith who went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Nick Costello, Blake FitzGerald, Luke Glascoe and Brock Kleszcz were credited with RBI for UC San Diego.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Toreros (17-9) took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first with an RBI single. UC San Diego answered immediately, tying the game on an RBI single from FitzGerald in the bottom of the inning.

USD did most of its damage in the top of the second, hanging six runs on four hits and an error to take a 7-1 lead.

The Tritons got one run back in the bottom of the inning, after loading the bases with no outs and scoring when Glascoe drew a walk to force in Emiliano Gonzalez from third. However, that would be the only run for the Tritons after a double-play and fly-out to right ended the inning.

The Toreros added a run in the third, two runs in the fourth and one more in the sixth to build a 11-2 lead.

UC San Diego had its best inning in the bottom of the sixth, after scoring on an RBI triple from Brock Kleszcz and a sac-fly from Nick Costello to bring him in from third to make it 11-4.

The Toreros rallied again in the eighth, adding two more runs in the inning to secure the 13-4 advantage.
