Traxler Earns First Win of Season to Help Tritons Past Terriers

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Eric Silberman and Zach Ermert continued their fine form in doubles, and Daniel Traxler picked up his first win of 2022 at No. 1 singles as the UC San Diego men's tennis team won a second straight match Tuesday morning, defeating Boston University, 6-1 at Northview Tennis Courts.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP
Final: UC San Diego 6, Boston U 1
Records: UC San Diego 3-8 (1-0 Big West), Boston U 0-9 (0-0 Patriot League)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles play unfolded in a similar fashion to the Tritons' last match. After Boston won at No. 1 doubles, UC San Diego's duo of sophomore Silberman and redshirt senior Ermert picked up their fourth straight win at No. 2, leveling the scores. In the deciding match at No. 3, freshman Pelayo Rodriguez and junior Phillip Lan trailed early, but surged back to win and earn the Tritons a 1-0 advantage.

In singles play, the Terriers claimed the first point, winning at No. 4 to briefly level the match before Traxler restored UC San Diego's lead for good with a gutsy performance at No. 1. The junior won the first set in a tiebreaker, then swept the second set to claim his first singles win of the year. Shortly after Traxler claimed victory, Ermert did the same in straight sets at No. 2.

At No. 3 and No. 5, Rodriguez and senior Sahm Irvine had taken the first set and led in the second, setting up a de facto race to the clinching victory. Rodriguez won the race, taking his second set by the same score as his first, and sealing the result for the Tritons. Irvine's opponent pushed the second set at No. 5 to a tiebreaker, but Irvine won it and the match.

Before Irvine had finished, freshman Charles Qian wrapped up his collegiate debut with a comeback victory at No. 6. After losing a close first set, Qian won the next two, also in close fashion, to put himself in the win column and collect another point for his team.
