SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The UC San Diego fencing team came away with two regional champions and automatically qualified five Tritons for Nationals as the NCAA West Regionals took place Saturday.
The University of the Incarnate Word hosted the event at the Alice P. McDermott Center.
Junior
Shawn Kim successfully defended his West Region Saber Champion title, while junior
Sarah Shen is the new West Region Saber Champion on the women's side.
Both Kim and Shen earned automatic berths in the upcoming NCAA National Collegiate Championships due to their stellar performances.
Also finishing on the podium and getting an automatic spot at Nationals were senior
Julia Hill (2nd in Women's Saber), freshman
Rafaella Gomes (2nd in Women's Foil), and senior
Justin Park (2nd in Men's Saber).
Picking up fourth-place finishes Saturday were junior
Vedran Markota (Men's Epee), sophomore
Lawrence Song (Men's Foil).
The 2022 NCAA National Collegiate Championships selections will be announced on Tuesday, March 15 at 12 p.m. PT via press release onÂ
NCAA.com. With five spots already solidified, the Tritons will find out if they have earned at-large bids.Â
Nationals are slated for March 24-27Â at Notre Dame's Castellan Center.
The Tritons are right back in action on Sunday, March 13, in San Antonio for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Championships. It is the inaugural running of the event as the MPSFÂ is in its first season sponsoring the sport of fencing. Action gets underway at 7 a.m. PT with the Women's Foil Individual Semifinals.
