LOS ANGELES – The Tritons faced another double header on Saturday during their opening weekend. They fell to #16 Oregon in the morning, 10-2, but bounced back in the afternoon to top host LMU, 3-2. After two short days of the new season, the Tritons are 2-2.
Â
GAME ONE: #16 OREGON 10, UC SAN DIEGO 2
The Ducks scored 10 runs, spread evenly across all seven innings. The Tritons rallied in the fourth with a solo home run from
Gabby Williams and a double from
Clarissa Reynoso allowed
Isabel Lavrov to score.
Â
GAME TWO: UC SAN DIEGO 3, LOYOLA MARYMOUNT 2
In the first,
Keila Bosinger stole second to get into scoring position and was brought in on single by Williams.
Deena Pederson singled to get on, then stole second, and scored on a double by
Sophia Real. Williams was able to score on a sacrificed fly ball by Reynoso.
Â
Jada Cecil threw all seven innings and is currently 2-0 in her UC San Diego career.
QUOTABLE
"We competed well today," said coach
Patti Gerckens, "we have been playing as a team this weekend and it showed today." While the score was 10-2, Gerckens felt that it didn't reflect how hard the team was working since the Tritons had nine hits against Oregon. In 2021, only four teams were able to get nine hits off the Ducks' pitchers.
Â
"
Shelby Thompson came in and her confidence on the mound was evident. It was exactly what we wanted to see," Gerckens said.
Â
"We started out hot," Gerckens said about LMU, "but we need more runs over the course of the game. We hit the ball well, but left seven on the base." The Lions had 10 hits today, but left nine runners on base, "
Jada Cecil pitched a phenomenal game, she kept LMU off balance and our defense was solid." The Triton defense had zero errors for the day.
