FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.–UC San Diego women's basketball fell to Northern Arizona, 86-54, on Sunday afternoon in Rolle Activity Center. With the loss, the Tritons (0-2) moved to 0-3 in the all-time series with the Lumberjacks (1-2).
The Tritons were led by
Sydney Brown with 19 points and seven rebounds.
Emily Cangelosi added seven points and six rebounds, while
Julia Macabuhay,
Parker Montgomery and
Izzy Forsyth chipped in six points each. Macabuhay and
Courtni Thompson each tallied two assists for the Tritons.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons got off to a slow start in the opening quarter, quickly falling behind 12-5. UC San Diego battled back midway through the period, with Montgomery hitting a timely three to make it a one-score game, 14-11. The teams traded baskets before NAU went on a 5-0 run in the final minute to lead 25-17 at the end of one.
The Lumberjacks carried the momentum into the second quarter, going on a 16-4 scoring run to lead 41-24 with 2:33 remaining. The Tritons found a bit of offensive rhythm to close out the period, but still trailed 46-30 at the halftime break.
UC San Diego went on a 6-1 run to open the second half, including back-to-back baskets by Macabuhay to make it 47-36. NAU answered with a 14-2 run midway through the period to build its largest lead of the game and went into the final break on top, 68-44.
The final quarter saw the Lumberjacks outscore UC San Diego, 18-10. The Tritons continued to battle but the deficit proved too much and NAU secured the 86-54 victory.
TRITON TIDBITS
- Sydney Brown was the only Triton to finish with double-figure points—her 19 points were her highest game total since Feb. 15, 2022 at UC Irvine (21 pts).
- NAU held the statistical advantage in FG percentage (43%-37%), rebounds (49-35), second chance points (16-9), three-pointers (9-3) and turnovers (10-27).
- UC San Diego starters were Madison Baxter, Sydney Brown, Emily Cangelosi, Julia Macabuhay and Bridget Mullings.
- With the loss, UC San Diego moves to 0-3 in the all-time series with Northern Arizona.
