Highlanders Down Tritons at Home

LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC San Diego fell to UC Riverside in a 1-0 result on Wednesday night at Triton Soccer Stadium.

The Tritons move to 5-5-2 overall and 1-2 in the Big West while the Highlanders move to 3-6-2 overall and 2-1 in the Big West.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons took five shots and threatened with one in the first half. UC San Diego was unable to get on the board after creating scoring opportunities with four corner kicks. The shot on goal came when Max Carvalho switched the ball to the right side to Jake Serpa, who came down the right field line and sent a hard cross into the box to Alessandro Allen. Allen's header was just saved by the Highlander's keeper. UCR's pressure resulted in five shots with four on goal in the first half. The Highlanders went up on UC San Diego in the 25th minute when a hard shot ricocheted in the box and rebounded into the net.

In the second 45, UC San Diego's formation shifted to high pressure as the Tritons were looking to equalize. Tallying nine shots with two on goal, the Tritons were unable to find a seam in the Highlander's defense. Allen threatened again on the left side with a pass from Nick Cirrito after a hardwon ball by Jack Hagan. Allen turned the corner on his defender sending a hard shot in that was flicked away by the UCR keeper. The gold and blue took another five corner kicks and were fouled eight times within the half. UCR dropped into a defensive posture to preserve the 1-0 lead and held on until the clock hit 90:00.

QUOTABLE
"We didn't get the result we wanted," said head coach Jon Pascale, "and [UC Riverside] did what they needed to do to get the win."

Looking ahead to the next game, Pascale added, "How you respond to difficult losses goes on to define you as a team. We have a resilient squad and I have full confidence we will continue to collectively grow and develop as a team."
