LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC Davis got a pair of first half goals and posted a clean sheet on the way to a 3-0 victory over host UC San Diego on Youth Team Day at Triton Soccer Stadium Sunday afternoon. Genavieve Fontes scored twice for the Aggies in the victory.
The Tritons (1-8-4 overall, 0-2-2) are still in search of their first conference victory of the season. UC Davis earned its first Big West win, improving to 4-4-4 overall and 1-2-2 in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The match opened with a brisk pace and both teams looked to generate chances early on. In the 12th minute, UC Davis' Lexi Trucco dribbled into the 18 and fired a shot which was punched away by Triton goalkeeper
Keara Fitzgerald, who was also battling the sunshine.
The Aggies broke through on an unassisted goal in the 16th minute. Lindsey Porter corralled a loose ball on the right wing and buried a shot into the upper-left corner of the goal to put the visitors in front, one-nil. UC Davis added a score in the 25th minute when Genavieve Fontes collided with Fitzgerald and the ball trickled into the net.
UC Davis held a 7-2 advantage in shots with only a
Kennedy Carter shot on target for UC San Diego. Fitzgerald made four first half saves.
In the second half, the Aggies added their third goal of the match when Fontes scored her second of the afternoon in the 63rd minute to put her team in front, 3-0.
Courtney Hilliard had a quality scoring chance in the 83rd minute but her shot was turned aside by Davis goalkeeper Caeley Goldstein.
QUOTABLE
"I think we are a team right now that is struggling with confidence and you see it when we get in these offensive situations," said UC San Diego head coach
Kristin Jones '04. "That's natural, and it's on us as a coaching staff to find a way to instill confidence in them moving through the rest of Big West play. We still have a lot to play for. We're a good soccer team and they just need to find that confidence down the stretch."
