Tritons Earn First Big West Conference Win with Clean Sheet at Irvine

Kennedy Carter scores in 51' to Lift UC San Diego

IRVINE, Calif. – UC San Diego sophomore forward Kennedy Carter scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season and the Tritons posted a clean sheet as UC San Diego won its first Big West Conference match, one-nil, at UC Irvine on Sunday afternoon.

The Tritons are now 3-6-1 on the season (1-1-0) Big West while the Anteaters are 5-4-0 overall (0-1-0 Big West).

HOW IT HAPPENED
Offensively, the Tritons came out strong as they have been wont to do this season. Carter fired a shot in the fifth minute that was saved by the Anteaters to keep the match scoreless. UC Irvine had seven first half shots, but the Tritons' back line kept the home team off the scoreboard with solid play. The Anteaters had a couple of shot attempts blocked. In the 28th minute, UC Irvine had a quality scoring chance, but UC San Diego goalkeeper Keara Fitzgerald made the stop.

After a scoreless first half, the Tritons got on the board in the 51'. Emily Knepler had a quality throw-in and Michelle Baddour fed Carter with a cross from the right wing. Her volley from 14 yards out beat the Anteaters' keeper and the Tritons held the lead. All in all, the Anteaters held a 17-7 advantage in shots and a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.

QUOTABLE
"I'm pleased with the way we bounced back after Thursday and against a fresh opponent," said UC San Diego head coach Kristin Jones. "Our mentality was top notch entering play, and defensively, this was by far the most commitment we've shown all season."
