NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – UC San Diego sophomore
Kennedy Carter scored a pair of goals – including the game-winner in the 59th minute – as the Tritons won a non-conference match at CSUN, 2-1, on Thursday evening. UC San Diego improved to 2-4-1 on the season, while the Matadors fell to 1-8.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The match was scoreless early, but
Kennedy Carter was tripped inside the box, leading to a UC San Diego penalty kick in the ninth minute. Carter gave the Tritons a 1-0 lead when her shot beat the CSUN keeper low and to her left.
The Matadors got the equalizer in the 28th minute. CSUN sent in a cross that was redirected with a header from Cora Willcot, tying the match at 1-1.
UC San Diego held a 9-4 advantage in shots during the first half, including five shots on goal to two for the Matadors. The Tritons amassed 10 corner kicks in the first half, surrendering just one.
In the second half, the Tritons regained the lead in the 59th minute.
Michelle Baddour pushed up the right side and sent a perfectly-placed ball through the box.
Emily Knepler drew out her defender leaving Carter on the receiving end, and she tapped it home to put UC San Diego back on top, 2-1.
The Matadors had a chance for the equalizer in the 87th minute, but Ashley Cruz's shot was saved by
Keara Fitzgerald – one of two saves on the night for the Tritons' goalkeeper.
QUOTABLE
"This was more of a complete game on our part; we stuck to the game plan really well," said UC San Diego head coach Kristin Jones. "Offensively, we were dangerous. Any time we have that many corners it means we were attacking in those areas. Defensively, our response to their goal was exactly what it needed to be and we played well on that side of the ball in the second half."
