UC San Diego Battles Visiting Texas Tech to 1-1 Draw on Sunday

Tritons, Red Raiders met for the first time

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The UC San Diego women's soccer team got a goal from sophomore Kennedy Carter in the 65th minute as the Tritons (0-1-1) battled visiting Texas Tech (1-0-1) to a 1-1 draw at Triton Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
In the first half, UC San Diego's stout defense kept the potent Red Raiders' offense off the board. Texas Tech out-shot the Tritons, 7-1, but three saves from sophomore Grace Taylor kept the match scoreless. Taylor also made a terrific point-blank stop in the 42nd minute, suffering an injury on contact with Tech's Ashleigh Williams, but Taylor was able to stay in the match. Williams received a yellow card for the contact.

Earlier in the first half, Texas Tech had a great scoring opportunity in the 28', but UC San Diego junior Kate Hottinger made a terrific block.

Each team had three corner kicks in the first half, and the Red Raiders held a slight edge in possession time, 54-46%.

UC San Diego got on the board in the 65' when midfielder Caitlin McCarthy found forward Kennedy Carter whose quick touch beat the Texas Tech keeper to put the Tritons in front.

The Red Raiders tied the match five minutes later on a goal from Macy Schultz. For the first time in the young season, the match went to overtime, tied 1-1.

The Tritons put together a pair of chances early in the first extra session, but neither team was able to score as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Taylor was credited with seven saves over 110:00, while her counterpart Madison White made two. For the match, the Red Raiders out-shot UC San Diego 22-6, and each team had six corner kicks.
