LA JOLLA, Calif. – Throughout the summer, UC San Diego Athletics will be taking a look back at the greatest moments and accomplishments from the 2020-21 school year. Each week, a Throwback Thursday and Flashback Friday segment will be featured on UC San Diego Athletics' Instagram and Twitter accounts.
On this Flashback Friday, we're rewinding to April 20 when the golf team swung its way to its first NCAA Division 1 victory.
Playing host to the St. Mark Invitational at St. Mark in San Marcos, the Tritons led wire-to-wire over the two-day, 54-hole tourney, finishing 5-over par with an 857. They had rounds of 275, 290, and 292 to top second-place CSUN by two strokes.
It was UC San Diego's first victory since early February of 2020 when the Tritons won the Fujikura Invitational at Shadowridge in Vista.
Senior
Ryan Vaughan and junior
Jared Gross tied for second place overall, both totaling a 2-under par 211. Each fired a 66 in the opening round. Vaughan followed with a 72 and a 73, while Gross went 73, 72. It was the best career finish for both Tritons.
Two Triton freshmen tied for fourth as
Davis Lee and
Jerry Wu finished at even par with a 213. Junior
Ethan Chen (+4) tied for ninth, freshman
Alex Hanz (+7) and junior
Sergi Mata De La Barata Barcons (+7) tied for 11th, freshman
Akira Isayama (+8) was 14th, and sophomore
Blake Iwaisako (+16) placed 16th.
The St. Mark Invitational was the fifth and final tournament of the pandemic-shortened season for the Tritons.
