RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The UC San Diego baseball team closed their weekend out with an 8-2 win over UC Riverside at Riverside Sports Complex, giving them the series split. A huge offensive output in the sixth inning proved to be the difference in the game. The Tritons improve to 12-24 and 9-15 in Big West games while the Highlanders fall to 14-21 and 12-16 in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game remained scoreless through the first three innings as both teams put on good defensive performances. Each team recorded three hits through three innings with the Triton's
Michael Fuhrman as the lone batter to hit for extra bases.
The Highlanders got on the board first when Cole Pofek hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
In the top of the sixth,
Blake Baumgartner hit a lead off single and Lucchetti drew a walk.
Jackson Kritsch advanced the runners with a Sac Bunt and Soderstrom hit the ball deep into center to bring both runners in.
Aaron Kim followed up with a single to plate Soderstrom at home plate and give the Tritons a 3-2 lead. The Tritons continued to be relentless at the plate as
Brock Kleszcz, Fuhrman and
Everett Lau hit RBI singles to give the Tritons a 6-2 lead.
The Tritons picked up some insurance runs in the ninth when
Marc Filia smashed a triple to the center field wall to drive in a pair of runners.
Michael Mitchell, who came in relief of
Brandon Weed in the bottom of the sixth, pitched a four-inning save. He tossed five strike, gave up two hits and a walk, and kept the Tritons scoreless through four innings.

Eric Newman. "We Strung together some really quality at bats in the sixth with Soderstrom's double being key to getting us going. Kim backed it up with a great two-strike at bat and RBI."

Return To Sport… Safely
In order for UC San Diego scholar-athletes to be permitted to return to training and competition safely and within federal, state, local and university guidelines, the athletic department implemented a number of measures designed to complement and enhance the university's highly-successful Return To Learn program. Notable actions include being physically distanced when practical, including during out-of-season training sessions; wearing masks, except when undergoing physically strenuous exercise; and maintaining proper hygiene. Athletes, coaches and staff are testing at a higher frequency than the campus population, teams adhere to CDC, NCAA and Big West Conference guidelines and department officials participate in regular meetings with conference and university-affiliated physicians and the UC San Diego emergency operations staff.
