Game Recap: Baseball |

Offense Surges in Double Header Sweep of UC Davis

LA JOLLA, Calif. – For a second weekend in a row, UC San Diego baseball won both ends of a double header. The Tritons won game one 8-3 and saw the offense continue to roll in a 18-3 seven inning win. The Tritons improve their record to 17-26 and 14-17 in Big West games while the Aggies fall to 13-35 and 7-24 in conference games.

GAME 1
Jackson Kritsch hit a lead-off triple in the second sparked a four-run inning from the Tritons. Logan White Jr hit an RBI double down the right-field line and scored on a wild pitch. After Michael Fuhrman worked the pitch count for a walk, Anthony Lucchetti drove him in with a double and Baumgartner finished off the inning with an RBI single to give the Tritons a 4-0 lead.

A two-run home run over the right field fence from Baumgartner increased the Triton lead to 6-0.

Noah Conlon put together his best start of the season and faced the minimum through five innings. He surrendered his first hit in the fifth inning. Conlon ran into some trouble in the sixth and allowed the bases to load with one out. He recorded a strikeout and coaxed a ground-out to short ended the inning.

The Tritons allowed their first run in the bottom of the eighth, but they added two insurance runs to take an 8-1 lead. Brandon Stewart hit an inside-the-park home run and Aaron Kim was hit by a pitch with bases loaded. The Aggies tried to rally in the final inning with a two-run homer from Omar Plascencia, but the Tritons were able to get the final two outs and end the game.

GAME 2
After giving up a run to open the game, the Triton offense got to work at the plate. Marc Filia hit an RBI double to put one run on the board and Luke Glascoe blasted the ball out of right field for a three-run home run.

The Aggies' Conner Longrie hit a solo home run in the top of the second to cut the lead to 4-2. Noah Sudyka had a response to that with a solo home run of his own. Fuhrman scored on a wild pitch and Filia brought a runner in with a Sac Fly to give the Tritons a 7-2 lead.

The Tritons put up another crooked number in the third and plated three runners to extend the lead to 10-2.

After a scoreless fourth, Paul Gozzo and Blake FitzGerald hit back-to-background outs that scored runners and Ryan McNally capped the three-run inning with an RBI single in the infield.

The Tritons put 10 batters up to bat in the sixth and scored five more runs to take a 18-3 lead.

Aren Alvarez went 5.2 innings to get his third win of the season.

FROM THE COACH
"Today I thought the guys really responded well from yesterday. We played good defense right out of the gate and really for today pitching led the way for us," said Head Coach Eric Newman. "Conlon was obviously outstanding in game one for us. Aren was good in game two. He showed some maturity to grind through some innings where he didn't have great command. Was good to see Glascoe and Sudyka get their first home run of the year in game one and Stewart got his first one with the inside of the park homer in game one. The offense did a nice job throughout the day of having good at bats and stringing together quality at bats. That was a good bounce back. We got to go into tomorrow and bring in a similar type of energy and focus to tomorrow as well."

TRITON TIDBITS
  • Stewart's inside-the-park home run was the first of the season and first inside-the-park home run for UC San Diego since Gradeigh Sanchez recorded one on March 28, 2014.
  • Stewart, Glascoe and Sudyka became the 13th, 14th and 15th Tritons to record a HR. This leads the Big West.
  • With a home run in game one, Baumgartner moves into a tie for fourth all-time with 27. He also moves into a tie for fourth in career walks with 108.
  • Noah Conlon matched his career high with six innings pitched.
  • The 11 walks the Tritons drew in game two was a season high.

Return To Sport… Safely
In order for UC San Diego scholar-athletes to be permitted to return to training and competition safely and within federal, state, local and university guidelines, the athletic department implemented a number of measures designed to complement and enhance the university's highly-successful Return To Learn program.  Notable actions include being physically distanced when practical, including during out-of-season training sessions; wearing masks, except when undergoing physically strenuous exercise; and maintaining proper hygiene.  Athletes, coaches and staff are testing at a higher frequency than the campus population, teams adhere to CDC, NCAA and Big West Conference guidelines and department officials participate in regular meetings with conference and university-affiliated physicians and the UC San Diego emergency operations staff.
