Tritons Put Together Complete Game in Series Opening Victory Against the Highlanders

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The UC San Diego baseball team won game one of their series with UC Riverside 20-1 in seven innings. The Tritons improve to 11-22 and 8-13 in the Big West while UC Riverside falls to 12-20 and 10-15 in Big West action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A single from Michael Fuhrman, a triple from Anthony Lucchetti and a double from Blake Baumgartner opened the first as the Tritons scored two runs.

The Tritons put up a crooked number in the third inning when they scored five runs off four hits and were able to take advantage of two Highlander errors. The Tritons loaded the bases up with no outs and Everett Lau drove in two runs with an RBI single. Paul Gozzo drove another pair in with a double and Fuhrman capped off the inning with a triple to bring in Gozzo.

Up 9-0 heading into the fifth inning, the Tritons put the game well out of reach with another five-run inning to take a 14-0 lead. Good hitting, along with three wild pitches and two errors from the Highlanders gave the Tritons their five runs.

Cameron Leonard pitched his first complete game of the season and tossed four strikeouts through seven innings. Leonard gave up one run, four hits and no walks.

Return To Sport… Safely
In order for UC San Diego scholar-athletes to be permitted to return to training and competition safely and within federal, state, local and university guidelines, the athletic department implemented a number of measures designed to complement and enhance the university's highly-successful Return To Learn program.  Notable actions include being physically distanced when practical, including during out-of-season training sessions; wearing masks, except when undergoing physically strenuous exercise; and maintaining proper hygiene.  Athletes, coaches and staff are testing at a higher frequency than the campus population, teams adhere to CDC, NCAA and Big West Conference guidelines and department officials participate in regular meetings with conference and university-affiliated physicians and the UC San Diego emergency operations staff.
