Aggies Walk It Off in the Ninth, Tritons Narrowly Defeated in Extras

DAVIS, Calif. – Sophia Real went 3-for-4 (.750) with a walk as UC San Diego softball was narrowly edged on Friday afternoon by Big West opponent UC Davis. Game one of three concluded with a score of 2-3 in a nine-inning thriller at Lue Rue Field in Davis, Calif.

With the results, UC San Diego drops to 8-16 overall and 4-9 among league play. The Aggies improve to 14-18 overall and 8-5 in conference, extending their win streak to eight games.

GAME 1: UC San Diego 2, UC Davis 3 (9 Inn.)
The Aggies filled the run column in the bottom of the first after an error and a walk led to an RBI single.

It wasn't until the fifth that the Tritons got the offense going. Isabel Lavrov was walked to start the UC San Diego rally. Then, Keila Bosinger singled to center to put runners on first and second. Another free pass put ducks on the pond, loading the bases for the Tritons' three-batter Bobbi Aguirre. Aguirre laced one to center field to plate Lavrov and with only one out, Sherriah Harrington drove in the go-ahead with another base knock.

UC San Diego would hold the 2-1 margin for two complete innings. Down to the Aggies' last out of the game, a double to left center plated the tying run to force extras.

The game remained tied, 2-2 for the eighth. However, in the bottom of the ninth, a leadoff single put the Aggies right where they wanted to be. A bunt and situational hitting advanced the runner 120 feet. With two outs and runners on the corners, Sarah Starks singled to right to earn UC Davis the walk-off victory.

Aggie ace Kenedi Brown silenced the Triton bats for eight frames, only facing trouble in the fifth. The Big West strikeout leader added to her total with seven on the day, 120 on the season. Brown earned her eighth win after going all nine in game one.

Senior Robyn Wampler also went the distance. In 40 batters faced, Wampler walked only two, allowing two earned runs on 11 hits. She K'd three Aggies as well.

Return To Sport… Safely
In order for UC San Diego scholar-athletes to be permitted to return to training and competition safely and within federal, state, local and university guidelines, the athletic department implemented a number of measures designed to complement and enhance the university's highly-successful Return To Learn program.  Notable actions include being physically distanced when practical, including during out-of-season training sessions; wearing masks, except when undergoing physically strenuous exercise; and maintaining proper hygiene.  Athletes, coaches and staff are testing at a higher frequency than the campus population, teams adhere to CDC, NCAA and Big West Conference guidelines and department officials participate in regular meetings with conference and university-affiliated physicians and the UC San Diego emergency operations staff.
