Gauchos' Offense Too Much in Home Opener Loss

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The UC San Diego baseball team fell 15-2 in seven innings to #22 UC Santa Barbara at Triton Ballpark on Friday afternoon. The Tritons drop to 8-17 and 5-8 in the Big West while the Gauchos improve to 22-9 and 13-4 in conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gauchos set the tone of the game in the first and scored seven runs on five hits and an error. Cameron Leonard only made it through the first inning and was replaced by Chris Gilmartin in the second inning. A fielding error from Everett Lau put Zach Rodriguez on base. Rodriguez scored and Jason Willow hit an RBI SAC fly to extend the lead to 9-0.

UC Santa Barbara added another pair of runs in the third to take a 11-0 lead. The Tritons finally got on the board when Everett Lau hit an RBI single to center field in the fourth inning. Blake Baumgartner drove in a second run for the Tritons with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.

The Gauchos added two more runs in the seventh to lead 15-2 and Nick Walsh came out of the bullpen to strike out the side in the bottom of the inning to end the game.

TRITON TIDBITS
  • The late Mike Tresemer was honored prior to the start of the game. Mike Tresemer pitched for the Gauchos during their heyday in the mid-80s and was the father of UC San Diego hurler Zach Tresemer. Zach Tresemer started the game for the Tritons and threw the first pitch of the game.
  • Logan White Jr. made his first appearance on the mound this season, recorded a strikeout and did not surrender a run.
  • Lau and Anthony Lucchetti each went 2-for-3 from the plate.

Return To Sport… Safely
In order for UC San Diego scholar-athletes to be permitted to return to training and competition safely and within federal, state, local and university guidelines, the athletic department implemented a number of measures designed to complement and enhance the university's highly-successful Return To Learn program.  Notable actions include being physically distanced when practical, including during out-of-season training sessions; wearing masks, except when undergoing physically strenuous exercise; and maintaining proper hygiene.  Athletes, coaches and staff are testing at a higher frequency than the campus population, teams adhere to CDC, NCAA and Big West Conference guidelines and department officials participate in regular meetings with conference and university-affiliated physicians and the UC San Diego emergency operations staff.
