LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The UC San Diego baseball team was unable to overcome a big hole early on and dropped game three to the Broncos, 13-6, on Saturday afternoon at Triton Ballpark. The Tritons fall to 2-9 and Santa Clara improves to 6-8.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Santa Clara put up 10 runs through four innings to knock out Triton starting pitcher
Brandon Weed after 3.2 innings pitched. The Tritons would not record their first hit until the bottom of the fourth when
Blake Baumgartner and
Devon Hawks each hit singles.
Â
Cole Dale,
Desmond Cabanilla,
Ryan Rissas and
Zach Tresemer came out of the bullpen and combined for seven strikeouts, three runs and one walk over the final 5.1 innings.
Â
The Tritons would get their first runs of the game in the seventh when Logan White hit an RBI double and
Luke Glascoe drove him in with a single to center.Â
Â
FROM THE COACH
"We had a couple of chances early. Obviously falling behind 10-0 that early put a damper on our ability to really grind out at bats," stated Head Coach
Eric Newman. "I thought the guys showed a lot of fight late. Getting down 10-0 after four innings is always going to be a tough hole to climb out of. I liked our fight throughout on the offensive side. We'll try to come out tomorrow and get off to a better start."
Â
TRITON TIDBITS
- White had a game high two RBIs and went 2-for-4 at the plate. His two hits were his first of the season and his double was his first in his career.
- Fuhrman went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate.
- Jo Bynum recorded his first hit of the season.
- Dale's three strikeouts were a career high.

Return To Sport… Safely
In order for UC San Diego scholar-athletes to be permitted to return to training and competition safely and within federal, state, local, and university guidelines, the athletic department implemented a number of measures designed to complement and enhance the university's highly-successful Return To Learn program. Notable actions include being physically distanced when practical, including during out-of-season training sessions; wearing masks, except when undergoing physically strenuous exercise; and maintaining proper hygiene. Athletes, coaches, and staff are testing at a higher frequency than the campus population, teams adhere to CDC, NCAA, and Big West Conference guidelines, and department officials participate in regular meetings with conference and university-affiliated physicians and the UC San Diego emergency operations staff.
