LA JOLLA, Calif.—UC San Diego women's basketball dropped a tough 74-73 decision to California Baptist on Tuesday afternoon in RIMAC Arena.
Madison Baxter led the way with 14 points on 5-for-5 shooting and 4-for-4 from three-point range, while four other Tritons scored double figures.
Sydney Brown notched a double-double in the contest with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while
Alex Obouh Fegue added 11 rebounds as well.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The teams battled in a closely contested first period, with
Julia Macabuhay knocking down the first eight points for the Tritons (3-5). With the teams knotted at 13-all, UC San Diego went on a 5-0 run to take the lead, 18-13 with 1:54 to play. The Lancers (7-2) answered with back-to-back baskets to make it 18-17, Tritons at the first quarter break.
The Tritons put together a strong second quarter, going on a 19-5 run midway through the period behind five three-pointers to extend their lead to 10. UC San Diego held CBU to their lowing shooting percentage of the contest at 26 percent (5-for-19)
Behind nine points from Baxter, UC San Diego took a 37-31 lead into the halftime intermission.
The Tritons carried the momentum into the second half, extending their lead to as many as 11 at the midway point of the third quarter.
Sydney Brown knocked down seven of UC San Diego's 16 points in the period and the Tritons took a 53-48 lead into the final quarter.
The Lancers chipped away at the Triton lead to begin the final quarter, using a 7-0 run to take their first lead since the 8-minute mark of the first quarter.
CBU held a five-point lead (73-68)—its largest of the contest—with 1:42 to play, but a layup from Montgomery and a clutch three-pointer from Cangelosi tied the game again, 73-all with 37 seconds remaining.
After the Lancers made one of two free-throws, UC San Diego had one opportunity left with 10.2 seconds on the clock. The Tritons got off two quality shots in the final seconds, but both took unlucky bounces and the rim and UC San Diego fell to California Baptist, 74-73.
