LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC San Diego scored twice in the first half and the lead held up as the Tritons topped visiting UC Riverside, 2-1, at Triton Soccer Stadium on Thursday night. The win snapped UC San Diego's two-game slide, improving the Tritons to 5-8-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the Big West.
With the setback, the Highlanders are 4-9-2 on the season (1-5-2 Big West).
HOW IT HAPPENED
UC San Diego wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. In the sixth minute,
Sophia Bruno played a ball into the box and
Lucy Tang redirected the ball into the goal with a header. For Tang – making her first start of 2021 – it was her fourth goal of the season.
In the 28', the Tritons added to their lead when captain
Kameryn Hoban scored her second goal of the season off a feed from
Caitlin McCarthy. Hoban had just checked into the match less than three minutes prior.
The Highlanders held a 4-3 advantage in shots over the first half, with UC San Diego goalkeeper
Keara Fitzgerald making a save on the only shot she faced (the other three were off-target).
In the second half, shots were even at 5-5 and each keeper made three saves.
The Highlanders got on the board in the final minute on a goal from Alexandra Hargrave, her fourth of the season.
Fitzgerald had four saves in the win.
