LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara scored the game-winning goal in the 79th minute as the visiting Gauchos earned a 2-1 win at UC San Diego on Thursday evening.
The Gauchos (7-6-3 overall, 5-1-1) moved into first place in the Big West win the win – their third straight. The Tritons had their unbeaten streak snapped at three. UC San Diego is now 4-7-2 (2-2-1) in 2021.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons got on the board in the 30th minute when junior
Ava D'Arcangelo had a takeaway and fired a rocket from just outside the box. Her shot found the back of the net, giving the home team a one-nil lead.
The Gauchos tied the match in the 37th minute on a goal from Skye Shaffer. Her equalizer sent the match into halftime knotted at 1-1.
The Tritons held a 6-2 advantage in shots during the first half, possessing the ball for 56% of the half. Each team had one corner kick.
In the second half, UC San Diego played well and out-shot the visitors, 7-4. But the Gauchos took advantage of a Triton foul setting up a free kick. Emma Vanderhyden capitalized with her third goal of the season to give UC Santa Barbara a 2-1 advantage with just over 11 minutes to play.
The Tritons kept pushing forward looking for a late equalizer, but UC San Diego was unable to convert. With the clock winding down,
Kameryn Hoban had one last chance for the Tritons, but her shot sailed wide with just eight seconds remaining.
