Potential Equalizer Called Back in 88th Minute, Tritons Fall to Gauchos

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara men's soccer match-up could have gone to overtime on Wednesday night after the Tritons scored off a free kick in the 88' to tie the score at 1-1, but the potential equalizer was called off because of a handball, and the Tritons lost 1-0 to the first place Gauchos.

UC San Diego dropped its third straight one-nil contest, falling to 4-8 on the season (1-4 Big West). With the victory, UC Santa Barbara is now 8-3-3 overall while remaining unbeaten in Big West action at 4-0-1.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
UC Santa Barbara took the lead early in the match, scoring off a corner in the 4'. The Tritons settled into the game and offensive runs by senior defender Jake Serpa created multiple goal scoring opportunities. The Gauchos out-shot the Tritons 9-5 and the first half ended with the Tritons trailing 1-0.
   
UC San Diego put high pressure on the Gauchos in the second half. Junior midfielders Cooper Lachenbruch and Cory Daley led the midfield with hard tackles and dangerous through balls. In the 88th minute, the Tritons scored off a free kick. The referees ruled it as a handball and the goal was called off. The game ended with a loss for UC San Diego, 1-0.
   
Shor made four saves in his first career start for the Tritons.
