Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Strong Late Push Helps No. 25 Tritons Earn Trip to CCAA Championship

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No. 25 University of California San Diego women's basketball team captured a 73-53 victory over Stanislaus State behind a 30-point effort in the fourth quarter, advancing to its fourth-straight California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament championship game.

With the win, UC San Diego improves to 24-5 on the season. Stanislaus State falls to 15-14 to conclude its CCAA Tournament run.

After the Warriors put up the game's first two opening baskets, the Tritons responded with 10 unanswered points to take the lead (10-4). UC San Diego did not surrender its advantage through the rest of the quarter, holding a 17-11 lead after the first 10 minutes.

UC San Diego protected its lead in the second quarter. The Tritons knocked down four shots from beyond the arc en route to outscoring the Warriors 22-15 in the second period. They carried a 39-26 lead at halftime.

The Tritons failed to keep their momentum going in the third quarter, as the Warriors put up 20 points to grab the lead (46-43) while the Tritons scored just four.

UC San Diego fought back hard in the fourth though. The same-name duo of Sydney Sharp and Sydney Brown helped the Tritons storm out to a strong start in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Warriors 14-3 in the first five minutes. Sharp knocked down three shots from beyond the arc for nine points, while Brown contributed five during the run.

The Tritons continued to stay hot throughout the quarter. They knocked down six of their seven shots from long range (86%) and ultimately put up 30 points during the period while holding the Warriors to only seven in order to secure the win.

Sharp, the catalyst of the fourth quarter run, finished the night with a game-best and season-high 21 points. The North Tustin native also contributed six rebounds in the victory.

It was a big night for Tyla Turner as well, as she recorded her second triple-double of the season. Turner racked up 10 rebounds, 10 points, and 10 assists across the night. Only two other student-athletes from across the nation have recorded multiple triple-doubles this season, and Turner becomes the first player in the Tritons' Division II era to achieve multiple triple-doubles.

Sydney Brown also finished the night in double-digits, as she shot 67% (6-9) and scored 13 points. Brown grabbed eight boards as well, the second highest total of the evening behind Turner.

Like Brown, Brianna Claros was also critical to the Tritons' late efforts. Claros knocked down two shots from beyond the three-point arc in the fourth quarter, and also recorded three assists. She ultimately finished the night with nine points and six assists.

CCAA Most Valuable Player Julia Macabuhay also chipped in nine points on the night, while collecting five rebounds, four assists, and a team-best three steals.

The Tritons' opponent for the championship contest will be determined tonight, as Cal State San Marcos and Cal State East Bay battle at 8 p.m. at RIMAC Arena. UC San Diego will face the winner tomorrow at 8 p.m. at RIMAC Arena.
